16/03/19 - Healing, Within and Without

Saturday, 16 March 2019

During the process of healing, things often seem to get worse before they get better. This can happen on both a personal and societal level and it can cause a range of reactions from upset or dismay to outright panic, but it's important to remember a few things about healing which apply on both a micro and macro level. As within, so without.

During any type of remedial treatment, an individual might experience what is known as a 'healing crisis' - as toxins and bacteria are dislodged or die off, they release further toxins and waste which is then flushed into the bloodstream to be filtered and eliminated. The process of flooding the blood with poisonous substances can cause a body to feel quite unwell, and for unpleasant or disturbing symptoms to appear (these may include a fever, skin problems, or other illness). These effects are temporary and are actually a sign that something is happening! If the person is committed to getting better they do what they can to aid the process of flushing the toxins out and repairing damage caused. They stay hydrated, let their body rest so it can heal, and avoid putting unnecessary strain on it. Vitally, they have to change any contributory lifestyle or environmental factors in order to prevent a reoccurrence.

So how does this apply on a wider scale? The headlines over the last few days, weeks, and years have increasingly indicated that our society is going through a massive healing crisis. On a national and global level, the 'toxins and bacteria' that are being flushed out are behaviours and attitudes that have either been hidden, or ignored and left to fester. If we - as a whole - are to heal, these need to be flushed out and brought to light. Only in this way can they be eliminated. However, we cannot expect this to happen without alarming side-effects.

The evidence of this can be seen in the acts of individuals, groups and even in many institutions (including at the highest levels of church and state). However disturbing this might feel to experience or to witness personally or through the horrors and revelations on our screens, it is another part of the cycle - it's a 'clearing'. Just like a stinking drain or clogged artery, it must be flushed out, however upsetting it may be. And it is upsetting.

If we are to overcome our collective 'shadow' to use the Jungian term - the dark and uncomfortable aspects of humanity (the hatred, abuse, and things that would have been either unbelievable or unspoken a generation ago but are now daily headlines) - it's essential that we find a way to eliminate and heal as efficiently as possible. It's time for honesty. To face up to and examine what has been unseen, or wilfully buried away (out of sight, out of mind). And to see how we can prevent these things from happening again.

Now, more than ever, it's vitally important that we find common ground. That we come together. It doesn't mean that we need to be the same (we are not, nor should we be), but we must learn to work in harmony to support our common and individual needs, to heal, and to find hope for the future.

This is all well and good, but what you may be wondering what YOU can do about this? Perhaps you feel it is beyond your ability to have an impact; that these things are all "out there". Do you have any idea where to even start? I borrowed a phrase from Hermes Trismegistus at the beginning of this post (as within, so without) and it contains the answer to this question. You can begin by taking responsibility for your own actions and behaviour. You are an integral part of the whole, and in dealing with your own 'stuff' you are doing far more than serving yourself (although that is a part of it).

A Course in Miracles teaches that "as you let yourself be healed, you see all those around you, or who cross your mind, or whom you touch or those who seem to have no contact with you, healed along with you. Perhaps you will not recognize them all, nor realize how great your offering to all the world, when you let healing come to you. But you are never healed alone." (Workbook Lesson 137)

So begin there. The rest will follow.
