Heal Thyself / Healthy self Tarot Spread

Monday, 23 October 2017

Today I drew the The Queen of Water (Cups) from The Good Tarot. This Queen is associated with words such as compassion, healing, insight, self-love and nurturing. She has mastered her own emotions and consequently, is able to provide emotional support to others. The two go hand in hand. In fact, one is necessary in order to be able to do the other. I can think of numerous practical examples of situations where it's advisable to deal with your own needs before tending to others, such as putting on your own oxygen mask before helping anyone else with theirs, which is emphasised before every plane journey.
You can accept or reject the way you are treated by other people, but until you heal the wounds of your past, you will continue to bleed. You can bandage the bleeding with food, with alcohol, with drugs, with work, with cigarettes, with sex, but eventually, it will all ooze through and stain your life. You must find the strength to open the wounds, stick your hands inside, pull out the core of the pain that is holding you in your past, the memories, and make peace with them. - Iyana Vanzant, Yesterday, I Cried
Reflections on Queen of Water - original card from The Good Tarot illustrated by Jena DellaGrottaglia
Today's draw feels especially pertinent as I prepare for First Degree Reiki in November. Before and after the first stage of Reiki training, self-care is very important. One is advised to stay hydrated, eat mindfully and avoid toxins or negative situations as much possible. Following the training, you develop your practice by healing yourself.
A Reiki initiation is a fresh start in life, and your first priority really needs to be self-healing, before you begin to use Reiki on other people, because when your own energies have been cleared you will be in a better position to help others. Remember the adage 'healer, heal thyself'? Well, this is the major focus of Reiki at First Degree level, and that means putting yourself first. It is about giving yourself the time to focus on your life, your thoughts, your emotions and your body; giving yourself time to listen to your body's messages and that inner voice which tells you when something feels 'right'. - Penelope Quest, Reiki for Life
It is clearly not a coincidence that the Queen of Water is related to both healing and intuition / emotional intelligence (or that it came up for me today). It is all interconnected. If we look into a body of water, we see our reflection, another hint about the nature of the insight offered within this card - the answer to our own healing is already within us, we just have to be willing to look at ourselves clearly to see it.

Of course, that's often the hardest part so I've done the logical thing and written the following Tarot spread to help. Only after writing did I realise that 'Healthy Self' and 'Heal Thyself' have the same spelling, only the space is different! Note that I've used the terms 'lifestyle' and 'life' to cover all aspects of the human experience - they apply equally to internal emotions and self-talk as to external things you may do/not do.

I hope that you find the spread helpful. If so, please feel free to leave a comment below, or on Instagram and to share this post. As a final thought, I'll leave you with my favourite affirmation from The Good Tarot booklet:
I heal myself so I can be the change I want to see in the world and so my compassion can inspire others. - Colette Baron-Reid
